What to Look for in a Business Coach

Either name you call him/her, it can be scary if you are looking for somebody to help.

How do I know this person will actually help me and not just take my money?

I was in your shoes not too long ago.

Today, I want to share the best qualities to look for in a business coach/educator before you hire them!

WHAT IS A BUSINESS COACH/EDUCATOR?

A business coach is somebody who will assist and guide the business owner in running a business by helping them clarify the vision of their business and how it fits in with their personal goals (Source: The Alternative Board).

GOOD QUALITIES OF A BUSINESS COACH

Accountability

I’ve been an entrepreneur for more than 25 years. And the best thing I’ve learned from all those years is to have an accountability partner! Having an accountability partner helps keep you focused on your goals, set realistic goals, and ultimately help and encourage you to get where you want to be!

No Fluff

This characteristic can be reflected in how I make my blog posts. Short and sweet. I don’t need unnecessary words to get people’s attention. I just share what I know so that those who want to start their own business can do so on the right track. You want a business coach who will do the same! Who will be straightforward and honest!

Offers Outside Experience

When looking for a business coach, look for somebody who offers outside experience. This could be experience from working in sales, marketing, etc!

Will be Honest

This is also one of the good qualities you should be looking for in a business coach. We all know it’s not that easy to trust anyone, especially when it comes to business matters. You want a coach who will be honest with you through all the difficult times.

Help brainstorm ideas

Everybody has his/her own goals and purposes for starting a business. Because of this, the business coach you choose should always make sure that you share your own thoughts and plans so they can guide you toward your business goals!

Ultimately help you grow your business

When looking for a business coach, you do not want somebody who will just give you advice right now. You want a coach who will see you and your potential and say, “I see where you can go, and I want to help you get there.”  

Heart of a teacher

Whenever you try to find a coach, try to look for somebody with the heart of a teacher. Somebody who doesn’t just teach for the sake of teaching, but one who is willing to share both intellectual and emotional values.

Those are the top 7 qualities of a great business coach!

P.S. At some point you will outgrow that coach and need to find someone that can help you move further along. That's okay! You will always be able to connect with your business coach/educator even after your time together has ended and you will be forever grateful for all their help. 

Word of advice: not every coach is for you. Do your research about what you need in a coach/educator for where you are now and where you want to go.

If you find somebody with all those qualities, become BFFS, because they are honestly amazing and truly want to help you succeed!
